Howdy Friends! Picking a domain registrar isn’t glamorous, but it matters. A bad registrar means surprise renewal prices, pushy upsells, and a clunky experience every time you need to make a change. A good one stays out of your way and keeps your domain safe. Here’s what we recommend in 2026.

What to Look for in a Registrar

Before we get into specific picks, here’s what actually matters:

  • Transparent pricing — The renewal price should be close to the registration price. Watch for registrars that lure you in with a $1 first year and charge $25 to renew.
  • Free WHOIS privacy — Your personal contact info shouldn’t be public by default. Most good registrars include WHOIS privacy at no extra cost now.
  • Clean interface — You shouldn’t need a tutorial to update your DNS records.
  • No aggressive upsells — You’re buying a domain, not a hosting bundle, a website builder, and an SSL certificate you don’t need.
  • Two-factor authentication — Your registrar account needs to be locked down. Domain hijacking is real.

Our Top Pick: Porkbun

Porkbun is our go-to recommendation. Prices are consistently low — and the renewal price is close to the registration price, which isn’t as common as it should be. WHOIS privacy is free on every domain. The interface is clean and no-nonsense.

Porkbun also includes a free SSL certificate and basic email forwarding with every domain. Those are nice extras, but the real appeal is that Porkbun just doesn’t get in your way. No dark patterns, no bundled junk at checkout, no surprise fees.

If you’re buying a domain and don’t have a registrar preference, start here.

Other Solid Options

Cloudflare Registrar — Cloudflare sells domains at cost with zero markup. There are no upsells and no renewal price hikes. The catch is you can only register domains you’re already managing through Cloudflare DNS, and the TLD selection is more limited than other registrars. Great option if you’re already in the Cloudflare ecosystem.

Namecheap — A long-standing choice with competitive pricing and free WHOIS privacy. The interface is a little busier than Porkbun’s, but it’s reliable and widely used. A solid pick, especially for bulk domain management.

What to Avoid: GoDaddy

GoDaddy is the largest domain registrar in the world. It’s also one we’d steer clear of.

The checkout process is a gauntlet of upsells. Renewal prices are significantly higher than registration prices unless you’re actively hunting for promo codes. WHOIS privacy has historically been bundled into paid plans rather than included by default. The interface has improved over the years, but it still feels designed to extract more money from you rather than make your life easier.

There’s nothing technically wrong with a domain registered at GoDaddy — transfers out are straightforward. But there’s no reason to start there when better options exist.

A Note on Domain Management at GR Host

GR Host offers domain registration and management as part of our service. If you’d like us to handle your domain alongside your hosting, we’re happy to do that. It keeps everything in one place and simplifies your DNS management.

That said, you’re always free to register your domain wherever you prefer and point it at our servers. We’ll help you get the DNS configured either way.
